Energy Efficient Commercial Refrigerators and Commercial Freezers

"Energy efficient,” “energy saving”and“environmentally friendly” have become common terms in our vocabulary nowadays. We use it so frequently in fact that we sometimes forget there are criteria for determining whether or not a product is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Just to make sure you’re making an informed decision about an energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly commercial freezer or refrigerator, you need to be aware of three tale-tell signs.

The first one is fairly obvious. It’s the blue sticker you frequently see on products which says “Energy Star.” When you see this sticker, you can rest assured that this product has been held to the standards given by the Environmental Protection Agency for Energy Star compliance. What this specifically means for you is that the refrigerator consumes less energy per year, reducing both energy consumption and your yearly electric bill. If you ever come across a commercial refrigerator or freezer claiming to be energy-efficient that doesn’t have an Energy Star certification, it probably isn’t that energy efficient, or at least energy efficient according to EPA standards.

The second one is a little more technical, so bear with me. It involves what’s known as “chlorofluorocarbons,” or CFCs. For the longest time, CFCs were commonly used as a refrigerant—the cooling liquid in a refrigerator. But it was eventually proven that CFCs were harmful to the ozone layer, and as a result new CFC-free refrigerants were developed. That being said, to find a truly environmentally-friendly commercial freezer or refrigerator, you must find one using a CFC-free refrigerant.

Lastly, when looking for an energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly commercial refrigerator or freezer, look for features such as self-closing doors, a delaying evaporator motor, and well-insulated doors. Although these features might seem trivial, they reduce energy consumption and, ultimately, help the environment.

Now that you’re aware of the tell-tale signs, you can hopefully go out and make an informed decision in choosing an energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly commercial refrigerator or freezer that will, in the end, help us protect our planet.
